Even before I learned meditation, or had been to a single personal development workshop I was setting my yearly intentions. It started naturally in 2007 whilst sat on a train home to see my family for Christmas. With my laptop on my lap I started to intuitively list out all the things I wanted to do with my next year. I had just finished university and I was keen to get focused and make it happen. With oodles of enthusiasm and a naivety that helped me dream big I went about designing my life on my lap during the hour it took to get home. And a year on it had worked.
If you are already thinking when will I have the time or how will I know if my intentions are possible, the right ones or good one? Take a breath and read on. As I have decided to share what I have noticed with you from the most successful and happiest people I know in terms of setting intentions as they literally do exactly this.
The good news is there is always time to do it whether you are on a train, plane, sat in a cafe waiting for a friend, or in bed with a cup of tea. You have time. Why? Because your life matters and how you choose to live it is important. There is simply nothing more valuable than finding the time to do this. To get clear about you is all you can do, so do it.
What I notice is that from getting very clear and extremely focused is that you get results. And the clearer you get the faster these results tend to happen. The key here is that focus creates reality, three words that I suggest you write down on a piece of paper and make very visible on your wall. As what you focus on you will create.
Scary? Nah! Empowering, Yes! You literally have the power to change anything you dislike about your life and you can do it… NOW. By shifting your focus.
As if this is really the case then what you might start to notice is that you are in fact completely responsible for the reality you are in as you read this blog. That’s right, where you are now is 100% down to you and where you are going tomorrow is also down to you. You are the master of your destiny and so I encourage you to get clear and get focused on where you would love to be in 2016.
- Find your purpose
- Use your imagination to dream big and set those intentions
- Engage your brain to work purposefully and productively
- Value your time highly
- Go grab the life of your dreams.
If you look at the world you live in it’s from your eyes that you see it, right? If you are sad the world looks sad, if you are happy, the world looks happy…. If you decided this is the year you will get fit you will take actions in order to get fit. Right?
Q. So why is it that some people succeed and others after January go back to their old ways?
A. Purpose. They didn’t have a reason, a why or enough leverage.
We all know that it takes great willpower to go after our perfect bottom, put the chocolate bar down or show up in our lives when it’s scary. So in order to create your dreams you need leverage, you need a reason, a bloody good reason actually that will make you be accountable and we need support. The reason behind you doing ‘it’, whatever ‘it’ is, needs to matter. Your purpose behind your plan must be able to hold your feet to the fire and give you the rocket up the bum that will launch you out of bed and into action. I say a rocket as a rocket is what it will take when it’s raining hailstones the size of watermelons outside and your partner is all warm and cosy beside you and you are choosing to go for a run to get those killer thighs.
So take a moment to look inside and ask what is my higher purpose, why do I want this? Is it for yourself, for others or to make an impact on the world? It could be all three. Only you will know why. But the WHY is what is going to get you to the finish line. This really is the fastest way to get results. Once you have the WHY, you can be sure that by setting your intentions you can transform your life.
Here is my suggested list of how to take action and get clear before 2016.
- Reflect on your last year and find your leverage
- Connect to your heart and get clear on your higher purpose - find your WHY.
- Create your intentions my making choices for you to focus on in 2016 - suggestions:
a. Health: Mental & Physical
b. Love & relationships
c. Career & impact
d. Personal Projects & hobbies
e. Being of service & giving back
- Break each of these into core goals and be specific
- Make yourself accountable to someone & get support.
. Get a coach or trainer
a. Enroll a friend or partner
b. Make sure it’s someone who is 100% for you and will check in once a month for an update on your creations.
Now you are ready to take action. Sit down, grab a pen and do the work. Do it now, open notes in your phone, email yourself, grab a napkin in the bar ask a waitress for a pen and start your list. There is nothing more important than this. It’s your life and it matters.
So go out there and grab 2016 by the balls because you can!
